I tried a different method for securing flights on this trip. We both have some United miles, but not the same amount and just short of the quantity needed for round trip. United was having a promotion on purchasing additional miles, but it would be very cumbersome buying separate miles and booking our flight separately to use each our earned miles. So I set up a United Shared Miles group, transferred both our separate miles into the shared group, and then purchased the needed additional miles into the shared group. I was able to purchase both our seats together. Since we needed multi-city flights ( Washington – Santa Barbara, Reno- Washington), I found it a little cheaper to purchase the flights as two one-way purchases.
Caveat on the Shared Miles Group – (1) it takes a 72 hour wait to add someone into the group, and (2) 24 hours until miles are available for use after transferring them into the Shared group.
So for now on, I’ll be transferring our miles into the Shared Miles group as we earn them.
