Day 18 – At sea, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn

A quick check on the map and I see we are crossing the Tropic of Capricorn today, off the coast of northern Chile. This is a sure sign of more tropical weather to come.

I was doing my walking laps on the Promenade Deck today, when you see people running over to look out into the sea. Low and behold, there are hundreds of animals jumping out of the water, like dolphins. Its hard to get any sense of size, viewing them with the naked eye, but they seemed like dolphins. I only had my iphone with me, and had no time to run upstairs to get my camera. So I started video recording, with the phone lens set to 3x. The best I could do. Having filmed that off the starboard side, I continued my walk only to realize there are more on the port side, and they’re even closer to the ship!

The next video is the best of what I got with my iphone. Then I captured a few stills from the video and zoomed in the most I dared.

A quick google search on dolphins vs porpoises has lead me to believe this a a megapod of dolphins. Porpoises have a blunt snout, while dolphins have a more pointed snout, which these pictures seem to show. That also means we’re looking at a size of at least 7 feet long, something which there is no scale to confirm.

On a sadder note, Laura’s been suffering from a cough for the last 6 days. I had a touch of a cold last week, but pretty much recovered by the 2nd day. Laura can’t seem to shake it and her cough is getting worse. So we made an appointment to see the ship doctor at the Medical Clinic onboard. Diagnosis was not influenza, but a bit of a nasal infection and bronchitis. They treated her right away with a nebulizer and loaded up a sack of medications… antibiotic, cough medicine, inhaler spray, saline nose spray, cough drops, a steroid for the throat, and some sleep medicine. Here’s hoping she’ll recover enough tomorrow. We’ll be sticking with mostly room service for a fee more days.
