Day 8 – Day at Sea Heading to the Strait of Magellan

After a full day yesterday, it was good to just relax on board. We are heading west from the Falkland Islands to Punta Arenas. We’ll be entering the Strait of Magellan sometime near midnight tonight, arriving at Punta Arenas by 6AM. The Strait is an inside passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that avoid the treacherous Cape Horn between South America and Antartica.

We’ve had gale force winds all last night and today, resulting in 10-11 foot waves. Ship is handling it well, partially because we heading straight into the wind coming from the West, but they closed off the upper deck and promenade all day, so I could not do my outdoor walking. Besides outside temperature was in the 40s all day.

So not much to report today, nice sit- down breakfast of Eggs Benedict and Mimosa / Bloody Mary, sat in on Port briefings for the next two ports, Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina, small lunch in the Neptune Lounge, happy hour beers, and a huge dinner of Parmesan Veal Loin, which was served similar to Weiner Schnitzel, hanging over the plate. It will be a bit early to bed tonight as we leave at 6AM tomorrow morning for the Magdalina Island Penguin Reserve in the Strait of Magellan.

Speaking of huge meals, I’ve been concerned on how to avoid having to roll me off the ship at the end of 31 days with all this cruise cuisine. There’s no scale, so I can’t really monitor any weight gain. I don’t have the answer, but I am trying several things.

  • Trying to exercise everyday. I already have that as a good habit at home, and now just have to keep it going
  • Will enjoy the great food, but need to keep it in moderation. Lunch in the Neptune Lounge when at sea seems to work out great as its just finger food like cheese, fruit and cocktail sandwiches. If we have a big lunch ashore of local cuisine, dinner will be a much smaller meal. Breakfast is small, but healthy. And I don’t have to have dessert at every dinner.
  • Alcohol may be my undoing. Perhaps I’ll taper off after the first or second week!
